Seattle Green Festival 2011

We are all in luck to hear that the Green Festival will be returning to Seattle this May! After just wrapping up in San Francisco, the festival will be in Chicago on May 14th and 15th and then come to Seattle on May 21st and 22nd. I attended green weekend last year and was blown away by the amount of exhibitors, knowledge of the speakers, and the interactive booths that were there. If you are looking for something to do in Seattle for a weekend, don’t miss this opportunity.

The Green Festival is a project by Green America and Global Exchange; two incredible organizations aiming to educate the world on Green Living and social justice. Even the festival itself strives to be sustainable. Volunteer workers help attendees sort their trash so that plastics, aluminum, glass, mixed paper and cardboard, electronic waste and compost are all diverted from a landfill and are recycled. In its first year in 2008 the Seattle Green Festival diverted 97% of all its use from the landfill. Now coming back to Seattle for the 10th anniversary of the Festival, participation by attendees is crucial. Here are some things you can to help do while attending the festival;

• Bring your own water bottle, plate and utensils
• Take only the materials you need
• Bring your electronic waste to recycle
• Ride your bike or take public transportation and get $5 off Green Festival admission!
• Most importantly – Spread the word!

One of my favorite parts of the festival is volunteering. I volunteered last year and found the experience to be fun, easy, and extremely educational. The festival makes signing up for volunteer slots easy as well as providing free admission for the whole weekend, a free organic shirt, and snack area during the festival. If you don’t plan to volunteer, you can buy tickets online at a reduced price than at the door.
Something I noticed that is new this year is the implementation of GF Bucks. When you purchase a festival ticket you will receive GF Bucks which can be used to purchase items from Green Festival exhibitors. You receive more GF Bucks when you purchase tickets online.

If you are looking forward to the event this year, it will take place at Qwest Event Center on Saturday May 21st from 10am-7pm and Sunday May 22nd from 11am-6pm. I highly recommend volunteering, or attending both days for the highest chance to catch your favorite speaker, workshop, or giveaways. As per last year, I’ll post a recap of my favorite booths, products, and new green living tips I learned. Be sure to follow me on Twitter @___Katy___ for my tweets during the event.
