Fun At The Eco-Chic Expo

I hope many of you had a chance to visit the Eco-Chic Expo yesterday at the Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center that Rachel posted about last week. Featuring many different local sustainable living companies, the expo was definitely a great and interactive way to spend a few hours. The expo featured a lot of companies all excited to share their products and websites with the public at this free event. Here are some businesses and events that really caught my eye!
Full Circle Farm is an organic farm that grows and sources organic fruits and vegetables and deliver right to your door! Located just outside of Carnation, the 400 acre farm grows over 200 varieties of produce and 50 crops in order to provide a large variety for their customers. They also partner with other local farms in order to provide more options for delivery baskets. The baskets of food are fully customizable, with flexible order size and frequency and as an added bonus, you know exactly where your food is coming from. With such a great name , Jello Mold Farm really captured my attention with their beautiful flowers. Diane Szukovathy and Dennis Westphall own Jello Mold farm, located in Skagit Valley. They grow over 150 different kinds of cut flowers and are very passionate about sustainable growing practices. One third of their land is set aside for wildlife habitat including beetle banks and a rock “condo” for garter snakes. They also compost, recycle as many things as possible, and use drip irrigation techniques to minimize water use.
Thinknow creates beautiful jewelry pieces made from wood and paper. Starting in February 2009, Thinknow designs are based on organic imagery and natural structures including a honeycomb, bubbles, and maple leaves. Thinknow recycles material and images from nature and turns them into beautiful eco-friendly jewelry that would make the perfect gift.
Yum! Theo chocolate has been mentioned before at the Chic Ecologist for good reason – they are the only organic, fair trade chocolate factory in the United States. In my economics classes at UW we learned that environmental sustainability meant that “at a minimum, future generations should be left no worse off than current generations.” Theo Chocolate captures this definition when they say they believe there is “no luxury in products that benefit us today, while jeopardizing future generations ability to meet their needs.” 
Theo Chocolate has committed itself to changing the way the cocoa industry operates. Their dark chocolate bars come in many different flavors and includes 70% cacao. Their milk chocolate (my favorite) is 45% cacao compared with normal chocolate bars who only use around 10% cacao. Theo produces very rich, delicious products that are changing the way the world views the chocolate industry. CRAVE Green is described as a glamorous evening of indulgence with an eco twist for ladies! Hosted by Herban Feast , the event will be held Tuesday May 11th from 6 to 9PM in Sodo Park. You must be 21 or over to attend and tickets are $35 per person or $50 for VIP access. The night will feature organic catering by Herban Feast, mini manicures, organic wine, a fashion show made of recycled, repurposed and organic materials, and much more! There will be raffles to win gift certificates, eco-beauty services and even a night at Olive 8, Seattle’s first LEED-certified hotel!
Piper Salogga who owns Natural Balance Home & Office and Sara Eizen of Nest are two vivacious interior designers who have collaborated together to share their favorite green furnishings and practices for great eco-friendly design. Sit + Sip is excited to encourage people to use sustainable and affordable options in their home. They are also hosting a home accessories swap! Instead of a clothing swap, people can come and swap home furnishings. The swap is May 23rd from 2 to 3:30PM at the Phinney Neighborhood Center.
